What are the applications of different weight plates?
The most important types of weight plates to understand are standard vs Olympic plates. Most proper weight lifting set ups at the gym will use Olympic barbells and weights. It’s the standard across the board, and Olympic barbells are more versatile and durable for lifting heavy on squats, deadlifts, etc.
Olympic Discs weight plate have a 2″ diameter centre hole. These come as a standard size across the whole fitness industry. This is beneficial as they fit all commercial bars and most plate loaded gym equipment ranges.
Standard Discs weight plate used to be the main choice for home gyms. But with well equipped home gyms on the rise, this is changing. Standard discs only have a 1″ diameter hole and will not fit on an Olympic bar. Therefore, it’s very important that they are not bought with this use in mind.
